The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has noted that schalenblende is a rare variety of colloidal sphalerite that is sometimes used for cabochons. Schalenblende is a zinc-lead ore with a concentric-layered structure that is made up of a mixture of sulfides. The layers can include sphalerite, wurtzite, pyrite, marcasite, and galena.
The name schalenblende comes from the German words Schale and Blende, which mean "shell ore". Schalenblende is found in many countries, including Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Morocco, Australia, Spain, Russia, China, Bolivia, and Canada. (All of this information thanks to Google and the GIA website)
