An antique French medal featuring Marianne, the symbol for the French Republic and also known as the Goddess of Liberty. This is a beautiful rendering of her, created by the renowned medalist and sculptor, Edmond Henri Becker. The medal features Marianne's profile, wearing a winged helmet and surrounded by mistletoe. Leaving no detail unattended, the reverse of the medal features more winding mistletoe, which is a symbol of everlasting life and good fortune. This is a beautiful art nouveau piece that perfectly reflects female empowerment. The medal is surrounded by a frame that comes to a twisted knot at the top from which the bail is suspended. The piece is is very good antique condition, with only slight wear to the gold fill on the jump ring and a portion of the frame, which is barely noticeable. The medal itself is in impeccable condition.
The medal was produced by a French company (active from the late 1800's through the early 1920's) that did such a fine job with their 18kt gold fill that it is often mistaken for solid gold, and rarely shows signs of wear.
Suspended from a new, gold filled, enamel bead chain and finished with a petite lobster claw clasp. The enamel beads are a bright emerald green.
