An antique French medal featuring Gallia, the ancient personification of France. Gallia represents Justice, Independence, and Victory. the symbol for the French Republic and also known as the Goddess of Liberty. This is a beautiful rendering of her, created by the renowned medalist and sculptor, Emile Dropsy. The medal features Gallia's profile, wearing a winged helmet and a braid in her hair. Leaving no detail unattended, the reverse of the medal features a rooster which is a symbol of everlasting life and good fortune. This is a beautiful art nouveau piece that perfectly reflects female empowerment, even though its original intent may have been different. The medal is surrounded by a frame that highlights the image beautifully. The piece is in excellent antique condition.
The medal was produced by a French company (active from the late 1800's through the early 1920's) that did such a fine job with their 18kt gold fill that it is often mistaken for solid gold, and rarely shows signs of wear.
Suspended from a new, gold filled, enamel bead chain and finished with a petite lobster claw clasp. The enamel beads are a beautiful turquoise blue.
