An antique French medal featuring Marianne, the symbol for the French Republic and also known as the Goddess of Liberty. This is a beautiful rendering of her, created by the renowned medalist and sculptor, Edmond Henri Becker. The medal features Marianne's profile, wearing a winged helmet and surrounded by mistletoe. Leaving no detail unattended, the reverse of the medal features more winding mistletoe, which is a symbol of everlasting life. This is a beautiful art nouveau piece that perfectly reflects female empowerment. The medal was produced by a French company (active from the late 1800's through the early 1920's) that did such a fine job with their 18kt gold fill that it is often mistaken for solid gold, and rarely shows signs of wear. That being said, this medal DOES show some signs of wear in the high relief areas on both front and back. It does not diminish the beauty of the piece, as it almost appears to add texture to the three dimensional design, but I am mentioning it for accuracy purposes. Please use the zoom feature on the photos to see the areas, and note that it is more noticeable at a magnified view. Suspended from my signature rolo chain of oxidized sterling silver chain, and accented with 14kt gold filled beads and wire, this medal is ready to wear!
