This is a wonderful and rare gold filled medals that were made in France in the early 1900's. Featuring the Warrior King, Vercingetorix on the front, and a rooster, with the word “Gallia” on the back, this is an exquisite antique medal in excellent condition. The medals were designed by the French sculptor, Edmond Henri Becker, and both are in excellent condition for their age. The company that produced these medals did such a fine job with their 18kt gold fill that it is often mistaken for solid gold, and rarely shows signs of wear. I have other medals and lockets in the shop that were produced by this company, and their competitors. Browse through my necklace section to see more!

~ 25mm medal on an 18" hand oxidized sterling silver chain, accented with my signature hand made chain using 14kt gold filled beads and wire.

~14kt gold filled lobster claw clasp to accent the oxidized silver chain, and the medal.

A little history about the image on the front of the medal, received from Brittanica.com : Vercingetorix (82-46 BCE) was a Celtic chieftain of the Gallic tribe of the Arverni. (At the time, France was called "Gaul"). Vercingetorix led an uprising of his men to attempt Julius Caesar (and Rome) from overrunning their territory. While he fought gallantly, he was eventually captured and forced to surrender. He was later executed in Rome. The back of the medals depict a rooster, with the word "Gallia" beneath. According to www./franceintheus.org, the rooster is one of the national emblems of France. During the French Revolution, The Coq Gaulois (the Gallic Rooster) decorated French flags. The symbolism is also a play on words, since the Latin gallus means Gaul (France's name during ancient times) and also means "coq", the French word for rooster. This piece looks wonderful on their own, or layered with other medals of different sizes and on different lengths of chain. Visit the 'necklaces' section of my shop for more available!
